When to See an Orthopedist for a Swollen Knee

Are you dealing with persistent knee swelling? If so, it may be time to schedule an appointment with an Orthopaedist. An Orthopaedist is a physician who specializes in surgical and non-surgical treatment of bones, joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments.

Knee swelling is always abnormal and can happen with or without an injury. Swelling sometimes can progress into a serious problem if not addressed. It can be difficult to know when to rest versus when you need to see an Orthopaedic specialist.

If you are experiencing knee swelling, you can try the RICE method. RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation). However, if your symptoms persist after a few days, it’s recommended that you seek medical attention.

Here are some reasons to make an appointment.

  • Limited range of motion: Swelling may cause stiffness that makes it difficult to fully straighten or bend your knee.
  • Warmth/Redness: Swelling that is accompanied by redness or warmth in the knee region.
  • Persistent pain: Pain with swelling of the knee that won’t subside with at-home treatments.
  • Inability to bear weight: The inability to bear weight on the affected leg due to pain, stiffness, or swelling.
  • A popping sound in the knee: A popping or clicking sound can indicate a ligament or cartilage injury.
  • Weakness or instability of the knee: Weakness or instability that causes your knee to give out or buckle.
  • Numbness: Numbness or a tingling feeling in the knee or anywhere on the leg is abnormal.

Swelling, pain, or any of the above symptoms should not be left untreated. Some conditions can significantly worsen without medical intervention. Play it safe and see your Orthopaedist!
